
Marcelo Varela, Jr., 64, of Cuero passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016. He was born in Cuero on July 2, 1952 to the late Adella and Marcelo Varela, Sr. Marcelo worked for Union Pacific Railroad for over 30 years and retired in 2012. He enjoyed spending time with his family and countless friends barbequing and going to Kickapoo and Coushatta Casinos.
He is survived by daughters, Meagan Varela (Jose) of Cuero and Michelle Varela of Universal City; grandson, Alexzaven Varela of Cuero; sisters, Mary Clark of Cuero and Margaret DeLaRosa (Tony) of Bryan; brothers, Danny Varela (Janie), David Varela (Rose), Johnny Varela (Pat) and Ricky Varela (Cindy) all of Cuero.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 23 at Freund Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a Rosary to begin at 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father David Berger officiating. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Pallbearers are David Varela, Ricky Varela, Johnny Varela, Travis Spears, Jose Lopez, Clay Lapp, Sammy Campos and Ronald Slovacek. Honorary pallbearers are Alexzaven Varela and the Valero Coffee Group.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
